Things to do in Centre County

Penn State Attractions

Beaver Stadium is only 12 miles away from the Keller House. Home to the Penn State Nittany Lions, the stadium hosts seven home games a year. The Keller House is close enough to enjoy the excitement, but far enough away to avoid the traffic and chaos in town.

But Penn State offers more sports than just football. Visitors can catch a hockey game at the Pegula Ice Arena, a men’s or woman’s basketball game at the Bryce Jordan Center, a volleyball game at the Recreation Building or perhaps a wrestling match at either the Recreation Building or the Bryce Jordan Center. There is also soccer at Jeffrey Field, Baseball at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, softball at the Softball Park and Fencing at the White Building. Whatever sport you might be interested in, Penn State has it!

University Park also hosts events for those looking for something other than sports. You can catch a big name concert at the Bryce Jordan Center (Twenty One Pilots, Garth Brooks, and Billy Joel have made appearances in recent years). For those interested in a different kind of concert, there is the Center for Performing Arts at Penn State, located in Eisenhower Auditorium. If you stop by when classes are in session, you may be able to catch a play in Schwab Auditorium, the Pavilion Theatre, or the Theatre Building. You may even be able to attend a senior recital in the School of Music’s new Recital Hall.

Centre County Attractions

Sure you want a picture at the Nittany Lion Shrine, or perhaps at the new “We Are” statue by the Intramural Building, but there is more to do in Centre County then just visiting Penn State.

Centre County offers caves, wineries and breweries, antique stores, historic towns, minor league baseball, and the largest Christopher Columbus museum in North America, all within 25 miles of the Keller House.

Annual Centre County Grange Fair

Every year since 1874 the residents in Center County have gathered in Centre Hall Fairgrounds the last two weeks in August for the famous annual Centre County Grange Fair. They have made a home away from home in tents and RVS, waiting for their favorite ride, ice cream, burger and musical performance. They marvel at the graceful Clydesdales in the numerous horse shows and competitions as well as the furry and floppy bunnies in the 4H exhibit. This and so much more welcomes you!

Cave Exploration

Penn’s Cave is literally five miles away from the Keller House and is situated on the same road. Woodward Cave is just 25 miles away. Both caves offer spectacular views and caverns to explore.

Antique Stores

Within 10 miles there are numerous antique stores for you to explore. A trip to Bellefonte will take you to the Plaza Centre Antiques, The Great Mish Mosh and Victorian House Antiques. In State College there is Apple Hill Antiques and Unlimited Treasures, while in Milroy there is Big Valley Antiques. Less than five miles away from the Keller House is The Beaten Path located in Spring Mills.

Historic Towns

As mentioned before, Bellefonte has some great antique stores, but it also has a gorgeous park (Talleyrand Park) and some great restaurants (Governors Pub and the Blonde Bistro are favorites!) Bellefonte also has an art museum and an old time drug store where you can still get an ice cream soda at the counter.

Boalsburg is only seven miles away and offers its own charm. Home of the Pennsylvania Military Museum and the Columbus Chapel and Boal Mansion Museum (largest Christopher Columbus Museum in America!), Boalsburg also claims to be the birthplace of the custom of placing flags on veterans’ gravesites for Memorial Day. When visiting Boalsburg, eating at Duffy’s Tavern is a must!
